Types of barrier methods of contraception

Types of barrier methods of contraception under barrier methods are meant vaginal contraceptives that create a barrier to the movement of sperm into the uterine cavity. There are two types: chemical and mechanical means.

Often, mechanical preparations are used to protect against unwanted conception. These include neck caps, diaphragms, and condoms. The mechanism of action is based on the installation of a barrier that prevents the movement of the sperm into the uterus and further along the fallopian tubes.

To obtain a greater effect, mechanical barrier agents are recommended to be used with chemicals (spermicides), whose action is aimed at destroying spermatozoa.Chemical contraceptives include candles, tablets, and creams.

It is allowed to use only one spermicide, for example, the introduction of candles into the vagina, but in this case, the effectiveness will be at a minimum level.

The choice of mechanical means should be carried out in conjunction with the gynecologist, despite the fact that these drugs do not have side effects. In rare cases, you may be allergic to latex or other chemicals.

The disadvantages of a mechanical barrier contraceptive include minimal effectiveness and some inconveniences when used. The vaginal agent must be administered independently before sexual intercourse and removed after it ends.

Chemical contraceptives immobilize spermatozoa, preventing them from approaching the cervical canal to get into its cavity. In addition, they serve not only to prevent unwanted pregnancy, but also to protect against possible infection with various viruses, bacteria or fungi.

Any contraceptive has its own advantages and disadvantages, but each body is different. And to prevent the occurrence of negative influences, it is mandatory to consult with a specialist.
